Student kitchen essentials: Get ready for moving in day!

$

0

With a new University year approaching, just what do you need to bring for your kitchen? Here are 5 key essentials you’ll want from Day 1!

Sandwich bags

Sandwich bags will come in handy more often then you can imagine from keeping left overs to making the perfect poached egg. Grab a roll-ful from the local supermarket or discount store before you start the year.

Foil… lots of foil

Foil is great for cooking as it means less washing up, which is always good. Buy it lots and buy it cheaply – any supermarket or pound shop basic brand will be good enough. Wrap trays in foil when baking or grilling to keep them them clean or just use the foil as its own container for things like baked potatoes.

Olive oil

Olive oil will come in handy when preparing all sorts of dishes – from just making sure you food doesn’t stick to adding flavour, keep some in the cupboard at all times

Spices and herbs

Spices making boring (read: Cheap) food a lot more interesting for little extra cost. Grab things such as Paprika, Cumin, Ground Coriander and Garlic Powder to make spicy fries or cajun chicken. Also pick up some herbs like Basil for pasta and oregano to make that plain margherita pizza just a bit more interesting.

Basic kitchen utensils (but nothing fancy)

You’ll want a basic range of kitchen utensils, at a minimum: A good set of knifes, a chopping board, scissors, baking/oven trays, pots and frying pans, and bowls (microwave-safe), as well as the obvious cutlery and plates for eating! However beyond that, you won’t need much: Don’t waste cash on expensive gadgets like smoothy makers, blenders or deep fat friers!

Student recipes: Three easy meals with a Tin of Baked Beans

$

Baked beans are a student staple and here are three unique recipes to get the most out of the cheap grub.

There are times when most students will roll their eyes and sigh at the thought of ‘baked beans of toast again’, but with a little creative thinking you can transform your humble tin of beans into something more appetising.

Next time you experience ‘baked bean boredom’ try one of these tasty ways to use them.

talking beans

Curried Bean Soup

What you’ll need:

1 tin baked beans in tomato sauce
1 small onion, peeled and chopped
25g butter
1 teaspoon tomato puree
½ to 1 teaspoon curry powder (you can vary this to suit your own taste)
120ml water

Fry the onion in the butter until soft but not brown. Add the curry powder and gently fry for one minute to release the oils in the spices. Add the tinned baked beans and water, stir well and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes and serve with crusty bread and butter.

beans-on-toast-1

Chilli Cheese Beans on Toast

This is a quick and simple way to liven up baked beans on toast. Empty the beans into a small saucepan and add ½ to one teaspoon of chilli powder depending on your particular tastes – if you like it hot, add more.

Heat the chilli beans up and just before you are ready to serve, sprinkle over a small handful of grated cheddar cheese.

Quickly stir the cheese through just enough to incorporate, pour over hot buttered toast. The cheese will melt and become gooey in between the beans without mixing with the tomato sauce.

Beany Mash

Here is a great replacement for mashed potatoes when you either don’t have any potatoes, or you don’t have the time to peel and boil some.

Open the tinned bean and empty into a sieve. If you don’t have a sieve, leave the bean in the tin and push the tin lid back down to enable you to rinse the beans in the tin without them escaping.

Rinse the beans until all the tomato sauce has gone and the water runs clear.

Melt a little butter in a small saucepan and add the beans. Heat over a low heat to warm the beans through for a minute or two – you don’t want to fry them. Add plenty of salt and ground black pepper. Remove from the heat and mash the beans well with either a potato masher or the back of a fork until smooth.

Use instead of mashed potatoes as a side dish, or use to top a small home-made fish pie or cottage pie. You can also mix bean mash with regular potato mash if you are running short of potatoes and want to extend the amount of mash you have.

10 student cooking tips for University freshers

$
0
0

University freshers listen up! We’ve put together our list of the top ten student cooking tips you need to know.

From saving money, avoiding waste and to easy cooking it’s all here.

student cooking tips

Buy and cook in bulk

Food scales up really well so buy lots and cook lots at once – but be wise as you don’t want to waste.

It’s a great move to stock up on foods that’ll last for a good while like pasta and rice, tins and the like, plus veg such as potatoes and onions. Store them right and you can make big savings by buying in bulk without throwing anything way. You can do the same with things like spices, kitchen roll and washing up liquid.

In a similar vein, it’s cheaper per person to cook for lots than just the one so where and when you can cook together. Easy meals like soups, curries, pasta sauces, bolognese and such can end up just costing pence per portion.

Buy loose

When it comes to fruit and veg, buy loose, it’ll almost always be cheaper and you can buy just what you need so there’s no chance of things going into the bin.

Tinned tomatoes

Tinned tomatoes are a student staple so pile them high, they can be used in all sorts from all on their own as a substitute in beans on toast (for the beans, obvs) to curry, Ratatouille, chilli, Spanish chicken, pasta bakes, the list goes on.

3399872a

Check out the farmer’s market

Check out the local farmer’s market or greengrocers where you’ll probably be able to get some great deals on meat and veg.

Use spices

Buy (and use!) spices. You may have thought asafoetida was some sort of disease before university but now it can make a gorgeous homemade Indian curry!

Love your freezer

You’ll be surprised at what you can keep in your freezer: Get into the habit using it to avoid chucking food (i.e. MONEY) away. MORE: > 8 surprising foods you can freeze to keep longer

bread butter pudding recipe 2

Realise you can eat ‘off’ food

We’re not talking about the slice of bread someone’s just found down the side of the sofa that’s turned blue here, but just ’cause a packet says it’s off doesn’t mean it is. Our tip is to use your common sense. Don’t risk it with things like meat, eggs & dairy but stale bread can make for yummy Bread and Butter pudding (pic above) while blackened bananas can be made into banana loaf or banana pancakes.

Be a veggie

Try being a veggie for one or two days a week as meat is pretty expensive and alternatives needn’t just be a bland salad. See our vegetarian student recipes.

Ask your parents and older siblings

Before you set off for University for the first time, ask the cook(s) in your house for tips and for some easy homely recipes. Try ‘em out before you go!
