Tips for saving money on your food shop

$

Food is so hard to resist it’s often tempting to pay much more than you can afford. Many a man has gone bankrupt because of a conveniently located takeaway.

saving money food shop 1

But if you’re savvy about it, it’s possible to dine like a king whilst saving money. Below are a few tips for saving money on your food shop, whilst still eating the things you love.

Shop online

Shopping in a supermarket is dangerous. No-one can look at that many delicious things all in one place and still have the discipline to walk out of there with a salad.

Whoever has walked past a packet of crumpets or some Moroccan topped houmus without immediately adding it to their basket or trying to rip the packaging apart with their teeth or swallow it whole like a wolf is probably not human. It’s one of the classic signs they’ve been replaced by a body snatcher from outer-space.

If you shop online you don’t get this. Sure they have the “suggested items” down the sidebar, but you can’t smell suggested items (take it from someone who’s tried), or see how large and delicious they are. You’re less likely to make impulse buys.

You also don’t risk being distracted by brightly coloured packaging. Without pictures of cartoon monkeys offering you coco-pops, you might find that “chocolate style puff products” are just as delicious and a lot cheaper.

You can also occasionally take advantage of loopholes in online deliveries, and get £60 shops for only £15. You’re pushing trolleys when you should be using a mouse finger at most.

If you do go in store, look out for yellow stickers

There are three reasons why something gets reduced at a supermarket: It has a short date, it’s superficially damaged (e.g. the tin is dented) or it’s no longer being sold (e.g. advent calendars in February or Easter eggs on Halloween).

Two of these reasons won’t actually affect the quality of the food you’re eating, and the third is solvable.

If you have a large freezer, you can dine like a king by getting high quality food when it’s been reduced by up to 75%, shortly before the sell-by-date and then freezing it as soon as you get home.

Shop immediately after a meal

Endless research has consistently shown that shopping on an empty stomach is a bad idea. The emptier your stomach is, the more food you will buy and the higher priced food you will spend your money on. If you’re trying to save money, you can do it by gorging yourself on food just before you go out to the shop. It’s the time that you’ll least want to think about food and you’ll buy what you need rather than what you want, because the only food you’ll want at that time is indigestion tablets.

And shop at key times

If you are looking for supermarket reductions and want to get in there first, before all the good stuff has gone, here is a handy little schedule of when they go up:

You can eat on a super basic budget if you plan well – here’s how with all the ingredients and recipes you need to live off just £10 a week.

We’ve teamed up with the folks at StudentProfit’s student money saving website to bring you a seven day, budget busting meal plan that comes in at less than a tenner.

It may be something to turn to if your budget ends up going out the window and money gets tight.

The ingredients

food
One tin of baked beans – 24p
Four tins of chopped tomatoes – £1.24
One tin of kidney beans – 23p
One tin of garden peas – 21p
One tin cream of chicken – 39p

Loaf of bread – 36p
Pasta – 29p

(Prices from Aldi, July 2015)

What’s not included

There are some ingredients we’ve not included in the list such as cupboard essentials, things like oil, spices, seasoning, butter, sauces and stock. We’ve done this simply because the quantities needed for one week cannot be brought individually (e.g. a sprinkle of chilli powder or a teaspoon of oil).

The £10 a week budget recipes

You’ll notice there’s quite a lot more recipes here then needed based on three meals a day proving just how much you can get from such a relatively little food shop.

Breakfast

For breakfast we’ve got ten possible things to try from our ingredients. You may wish to make them all or use the ingredients from a meal you don’t cook in another recipe for a bigger serving.

Student food budget: How much is enough? And top tips for spending less

$
0
0

How much do you need for a student food budget? We take a look at just how much is enough!

student food budget 1

When that student loan payment hits your bank account for a brief few minutes it feels like you’re the richest person around.

But quickly comes the rent, bills and before you know it you’re dangerously close to going into the red.

When it comes to budgeting at University, how much can you live on?

Student food budget: How much do you need?

Let’s start with a worse case scenario. Assuming you’ve access to water (to drink!) then £5 will provide more than enough instant noodles to keep you alive, if providing a rather boring and unhealthy diet.

But you don’t need much more to enjoy some actual food – you can eat for just £10 a week if you buy wisely and carefully plan meals well ahead of time. And no, you won’t be living off beans on toast.

At £20 or so per week your student food budget can actually provide you with some very nice, healthy and varied meals.

And at £30 or over you should consider yourself pretty privileged.

So much do you need? We’d say £15-25 per week is enough to give you a nice, balanced and varied diet – if you put the effort in. More than that and you really shouldn’t have any problems.

How to spend your student food budget

Of course, it’s pretty easy coming up with a number but just how do you spend it?

Cook yourself and PLAN

Ready meals are expensive. Learn to cook easy student recipes yourself and plan your meals ahead of time. Take an hour out each week to plan roughly your meals for the next seven days. Pick meals that share common ingredients to save money. For example, a pack of mince can be used to make Shepherd’s pie, burgers, lasagna, bolognese, chilli con carne, meatballs and even curry.

Use budget supermarkets

aldi
Avoid Waitrose and use Aldi and Lidl for good deals. Iceland is also great for, well, freezer stuff.

Buy in bulk (and freeze)

Gram for gram things generally get cheaper the more you buy, so it’s good to invest in food when you have the money for long term savings. This is especially true with meat which you can easily cut up and prepare before freezing until you want to cook with it. You can also freeze a load of other stuff such as eggs, milk and bread.

Go veggie

Veggies
Meat is ultimately pretty expensive and can be substituted in many cases for cheaper alternatives. Vegetarian meats are often just as costly, so trying beans, quinoa, eggs and other non-meat proteins is the way to go.

Buy and cook together

Don’t just buy in bulk but cook in bulk too and share the costs. The bigger the meal you make the more you’ll each save as the cost per serving will go down, therefore every one wins! Big, cheap and homemade dishes like lasagna, toad in the hole and pasta bakes are great things to make and share.

18 student cooking tips for University freshers

$

University freshers listen up! We’ve put together our list of the top ten student cooking tips you need to know.

From saving money, avoiding waste and to easy cooking it’s all here.

student cooking tips

Buy and cook in bulk

Food scales up really well so buy lots and cook lots at once – but be wise as you don’t want to waste.

It’s a great move to stock up on foods that’ll last for a good while like pasta and rice, tins and the like, plus veg such as potatoes and onions. Store them right and you can make big savings by buying in bulk without throwing anything way. You can do the same with things like spices, kitchen roll and washing up liquid.

In a similar vein, it’s cheaper per person to cook for lots than just the one so where and when you can cook together. Easy meals like soups, curries, pasta sauces, bolognese and such can end up just costing pence per portion.

Buy loose

When it comes to fruit and veg, buy loose, it’ll almost always be cheaper and you can buy just what you need so there’s no chance of things going into the bin.

Tinned tomatoes

Tinned tomatoes are a student staple so pile them high, they can be used in all sorts from all on their own as a substitute in beans on toast (for the beans, obvs) to curry, Ratatouille, chilli, Spanish chicken, pasta bakes, the list goes on.

3399872a

Check out the farmer’s market

Check out the local farmer’s market or greengrocers where you’ll probably be able to get some great deals on meat and veg.

Use spices

Buy (and use!) spices. You may have thought asafoetida was some sort of disease before university but now it can make a gorgeous homemade Indian curry!

Love your freezer

You’ll be surprised at what you can keep in your freezer: Get into the habit using it to avoid chucking food (i.e. MONEY) away. MORE: > 8 surprising foods you can freeze to keep longer

bread butter pudding recipe 2

Realise you can eat ‘off’ food

We’re not talking about the slice of bread someone’s just found down the side of the sofa that’s turned blue here, but just ’cause a packet says it’s off doesn’t mean it is. Our tip is to use your common sense. Don’t risk it with things like meat, eggs & dairy but stale bread can make for yummy Bread and Butter pudding (pic above) while blackened bananas can be made into banana loaf or banana pancakes.

Be a veggie

Try being a veggie for one or two days a week as meat is pretty expensive and alternatives needn’t just be a bland salad. See our vegetarian student recipes.

Ask your parents and older siblings

Before you set off for University for the first time, ask the cook(s) in your house for tips and for some easy homely recipes. Try ’em out before you go!

cup recipe

Microwaves are amazing

You generally can’t go wrong with microwave meals, they’re super quick, easy and require little clean up. You may be surprised at what your microwave is capable of, from bacon to cakes: Check out our student microwave recipes.

Cook from scratch

Whether it’s burgers or hollandaise sauce, cooking from scratch is always cheaper and healthier, providing low cost meals that aren’t laden with salt and dodgy ingredients.

aldi

Shop smart

Learn how to save money shopping and avoid getting caught out by dirty supermarket tactics that are design to make you spend more than you need or want to.

Don’t waste money on cookbooks

Obviously we would say this but with the internet at your finger tips there really is no need, there are literally thousands of online resources for all sorts of recipes, meal ideas and cooking tips.

Easy Chinese chicken stir-fry 1

Love to make stir fries

Stir fries are really trivial to make, super quick to cook, easy to adapt and require just the one pan. Invest in a good wok, chuck in your ingredients and keep stirring.

Invest in some kitchen scissors

A good pair of kitchen scissors make cooking and preparing meals a lot easier and quicker, they’re great for chopping up things like meat or herbs.

Make substitutions

You don’t need to follow recipes to the letter. You can make substitutes to suit your tastes or diet requirements or just what’s left in the fridge. Check out the Food thesaurus for a pretty much conclusive guide to food substitutions.

food

PLAN!

Plan well enough and you can get by well enough on just £10 a week on food without resorting to instant noodles.

Always use leftovers

Chucking out food is just binning cash, always use up leftovers by incorporating them into new meals or freezing (if applicable). > Make the most of leftovers: 16 recipe ideas for leftover food
